During Jon's music degree at the University of Southampton, he was asked to develop a presentation on any area of extended vocal techniques. His presentation was called “An Introduction to beat-boxing”. He was awarded a high first grade for this unit and was encouraged, by his tutor, to take this further professionally. Over the past few years he has incorporated beat-boxing into an a-capella choir; S.I.N.G, various bands and his solo material. Recently he has been setting up charity beat-boxing workshops in Purley where he hopes to take this further afield. Although beat-boxing can be referred to as an extended vocal technique and as part of the hip hop world, after years of development he feels this technique has become its own instrument. Beat-boxing is not only brilliant for developing a new musical skill, it is a fun way of learning and creates enjoyment and a new approach to teaching music and team building.
